Pei Yu and Wei Shao. After the dynastic change, he lived in seclusion in the Juewei Mountains, and people from all quarters looked up to his noble character. In the jihai year, when the boxue hongci examination was recommended, the master firmly stayed in bed and did not go; the authorities urged him onto the road, yet the master ultimately kept his steadfast integrity. The Sagely Ancestor, the Benevolent Emperor, recognized his sincerity and issued an edict: Fu Shan has long been known for his literary learning; mindful of his advanced age, grant him a rank with special favor to show imperial grace. Thereupon he was appointed Zhongshu of the Grand Secretariat, and permitted to return to his native place. Indeed, his lofty aspirations had long been held dear in the heart of the sagely Son of Heaven. Yet those who praise him in the world greatly transmit his calligraphy and medical art—is this not too narrow! Calligraphy is one of the six arts, and the master had indeed devoted his mind to it. As for medicine, it was that by which the master concealed his traces and fled from fame, yet fame followed him—how extraordinary! Moreover, how can medicine be spoken of lightly? Since the Later Han, when Zhang Zhongjing created the formulary texts, for some two thousand years, specialists and famous masters have rarely fathomed its profundities. The master, attending to it as a spare occupation, at once penetrated to the spirit-like. I have read the Jianji Tang Wenji and such books as the Gushang, which record the master's anecdotes: his diagnosis of illness was subtle yet sound; his use of formulas was extraordinary yet lawful, beyond what men like Dongyuan and Danxi could attain. The ancients said Zhang Zhongjing had spirit-like thought but lacked lofty elegance, and so was known for formulas and techniques. The master both possessed lofty elegance and abounded in refined thought—thus are the worthy unfathomable! I formerly heard that the master had personally written two volumes on gynecology and on postpartum, but had not seen them. Recently I obtained a manuscript copy from a friend. In the yiyou year, when my fellow student Wang Kuizhang came for the provincial examination, he spoke fully of the worthiness of Li Ziji. By the winter of the bingxu year, funds were indeed sent with orders to commit it to the woodblocks—a most virtuous deed. Therefore I gladly write a preface to transmit it, and also recount the master's life and great integrity, and the broad grace of the sagely court, and cannot but close the volume with repeated sighs. Inscribed by Zhang Fengxiang of Danya, summer, fifth month, dinghai year of the Daoguang reign.
