Baduanjin: The Comprehensive Guide to the Eight Chinese Energy Exercises

Ba Duan Jin — China's National Treasure



Ba Duan Jin (八段锦) literally means "Eight Pieces of Brocade." It is a set of 8 ancient Chinese exercises over 800 years old, designed to move energy throughout the entire body.

Why Ba Duan Jin?

The Eight Movements



Movement 1: Raising the Sky with Both Hands (双手托天理三焦)
Benefit: Stretches the spine and activates energy throughout the entire trunk
Method: Stand upright, slowly raise your hands above your head while inhaling, lower them while exhaling. Repeat 6-8 times.
Energy line: Triple Burner (三焦)

Movement 2: Drawing the Bow to Shoot the Eagle (左右开弓似射雕)
Benefit: Opens the chest and strengthens the lungs and arms
Method: Take a horse stance, extend your arms as if drawing a bow. Alternate sides.
Energy line: Lung (肺经)

Movement 3: Raising the Hands to Regulate the Spleen and Stomach (调理脾胃须单举)
Benefit: Improves digestion and strengthens the spleen and stomach
Method: Raise one hand upward and the other downward at the same time. Alternate.
Energy line: Spleen and Stomach (脾胃经)

Movement 4: Looking Back to Treat Fatigue (五劳七伤往后瞧)
Benefit: Relieves neck and shoulder tension and improves blood circulation to the brain
Method: Slowly turn your head to look behind you. Alternate sides.

Movement 5: Shaking the Head and Wagging the Tail (摇头摆尾去心火)
Benefit: Calms heart fire and relieves tension and anxiety
Method: Bend forward and rotate the torso in a circular motion.

Movement 6: Touching the Feet to Strengthen the Kidneys (两手攀足固肾腰)
Benefit: Stretches the back and strengthens the kidneys
Method: Slowly bend forward and try to touch your feet.

Movement 7: Clenching Fists Tightly to Increase Energy (攒拳怒目增气力)
Benefit: Strengthens the grip and increases energy and focus
Method: Clench your fists tightly with a sharp gaze, then relax.

Movement 8: Bouncing the Body to Eliminate Illness (背后七颠百病消)
Benefit: Activates blood circulation throughout the entire body
Method: Stand on your tiptoes, then lower onto your heels lightly. Repeat 7 times.
