Traditionally used for "heat-facilitated diarrhea" in which the exterior has not fully resolved and heat has entered the interior, presenting with fever and thirst, abdominal pain, diarrhea or dysentery with yellow foul-smelling stool and a burning anus, scanty dark urine, sometimes panting with sweating, a red tongue with a yellow coating, and a rapid pulse. The formula is bitter and cold by nature, so it is contraindicated for cold-deficiency diarrhea and spleen-kidney yang deficiency and should not be taken long-term; pregnancy, breastfeeding, children, and people on chronic medication require supervision by a qualified Chinese medicine practitioner.
