Sleep in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine considers sleep the most important health factor — more than food or exercise. "One bad night's sleep equals ten days of malnutrition."

The Chinese Biological Clock (子午流注)

Every two hours, a different organ is at its peak activity:

Critical Times

🔴 Liver Time (1 AM-3 AM)

  • If you are awake during this time, the liver is not detoxifying
  • Chronic waking at 1-3 AM = liver problem (repressed anger)
  • Solution: Sleep before 11 PM, press LR3 before bed

🔴 Lung Time (3 AM-5 AM)

  • If you wake at 3-5 AM = lung problem (grief, phlegm)
  • Solution: Deep breathing, address grief

Chinese Sleep Positions

1. On the Right Side ✅ (Recommended)

  • Benefit: Supports the stomach (which is on the left), relieves the heart
  • Like: "Lion's sleep" — body relaxed, hand on the belly
  • Suitable for: Most people

2. On the Back ✅ (Acceptable)

  • Benefit: Neutral spine
  • Warning: May cause snoring
  • Suitable for: Back pain

3. On the Stomach ❌ (Avoid)

  • Harm: Pressure on the heart and lungs
  • Causes: Disturbing dreams, morning fatigue

4. On the Left Side ⚠️ (Less ideal)

  • Harm: Pressure on the stomach and heart
  • Acceptable: Temporarily to relieve heartburn

Chinese Sleep Rituals

🌙 One Hour Before Sleep

  1. 1Turn off screens (blue light disrupts melatonin)
  2. 2Soak your feet in warm water for 15 minutes (draws qi down from the head)
  3. 3Drink a light tea: lemon balm or chamomile
  4. 4Read or meditate for 15 minutes

🛏️ In Bed

  1. 1Lie on your right side
  2. 2Breathe 4-7-8: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8
  3. 3Visualize: Qi flowing from the head down to the feet
  4. 4Slight smile — relaxes the facial muscles

🌅 Upon Waking

  1. 1Don't jump up! — Lie still for 30 seconds
  2. 2Massage your face with your fingertips
  3. 3Drink a glass of warm water
  4. 4Do 5 minutes of stretching

Habits That Kill Sleep

Heavy meal before bed — the stomach works instead of resting

Phone in bed — light + mental stimulation

Intense evening exercise — qi floats upward

Coffee after 3 PM — caffeine stays for 8 hours

Hot room — the body needs coolness to sleep

Long daytime naps — disrupt the rhythm

😴 The golden rule: "Sleep when you feel sleepy, not when the time comes." The body knows when it needs sleep. Don't fight drowsiness with a screen!
