Food as Medicine (Dietary Therapy 食疗)

Traditional Chinese Medicine regards food as the first foundation of health. "Food and medicine share the same source" (药食同源).

The Four Natures of Foods (四气)

Every food has a thermal nature:

🔥 Hot (热)

Examples: Ginger, cinnamon, pepper, mutton

Benefit: Warms, expels cold, moves qi

When: Winter, cold body, weak digestion

Avoid: Summer, heat, inflammation

☀️ Warm (温)

Examples: Chicken, dates, walnuts, onion, garlic

Benefit: Strengthens yang, supports digestion

When: Autumn/winter, mild cold

Avoid: Summer heat

⚖️ Neutral (平)

Examples: Rice, potato, apple, egg, beef

Benefit: Balanced nourishment, safe daily

When: Any time, any constitution

Suitable for: Everyone

❄️ Cold (寒)

Examples: Watermelon, cucumber, mint, salad, ice cream

Benefit: Cools, extinguishes heat

When: Summer, body heat

Avoid: Winter, cold, weak digestion

The Five Flavors of Foods (五味)

🍯 Sweet (甘) — Spleen/Stomach

  • Benefit: Nourishes, moistens, harmonizes
  • Examples: Rice, wheat, dates, sweet potato, carrot
  • Excess: Dampness, phlegm, obesity

🧂 Salty (咸) — Kidney/Bladder

  • Benefit: Softens, descends, enters the kidney
  • Examples: Salt, seaweed, peanut
  • Excess: Fluid retention, high blood pressure

🍋 Sour (酸) — Liver/Gallbladder

  • Benefit: Astringes, stabilizes, moistens
  • Examples: Lemon, vinegar, tomato, olive
  • Excess: Spasms, congestion

🌶️ Pungent/Spicy (辛) — Lung/Large Intestine

  • Benefit: Moves, disperses, expels externally
  • Examples: Ginger, onion, garlic, pepper, mint
  • Excess: Depletes qi/yin, dryness

☕ Bitter (苦) — Heart/Small Intestine

  • Benefit: Dries, cools, descends
  • Examples: Green tea, coffee, celery, lettuce
  • Excess: Cold, depletes yang

Chinese Eating Rules

1. Breakfast like a king

  • The largest and most nourishing
  • Warm (not cold!)
  • Time: 7-9 AM (stomach time)

2. Lunch like a prince

  • Moderate in quantity
  • Varied
  • Time: 11 AM-1 PM (heart time)

3. Dinner like a pauper

  • The lightest and least
  • Three hours before sleep
  • Time: 5-7 PM (kidney time)

The Heat Rule

Do not drink cold water with food! The stomach is a "vessel" that needs heat to digest food. Cold water extinguishes the "stomach fire" and weakens digestion. Drink warm or at room temperature.
