Ideal Suhoor Meals According to Traditional Chinese Medicine

Suhoor in the Eyes of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Suhoor is the "fuel for the entire day" during Ramadan — and Traditional Chinese Medicine sets strict rules for the morning meal: warm, balanced, slow to digest, and not burdensome to the stomach.

Principles of Chinese-Style Suhoor

1. Warm cooked food — neither cold nor iced: The spleen "loves warmth and hates cold" — iced meals weaken digestion for the whole day.

2. Balance of slow and fast energy: Dates (slow energy) + whole grains (medium) + a little fruit (fast) — an energy current that extends to your iftar.

3. Little salt and smart water: Drinking huge amounts at night strains the kidneys — drink gradually from suhoor until iftar.

Three Complete Suhoor Templates

Winter template (dry, hot day):
  • Oats cooked in warm milk + dates + nuts

  • Boiled egg

  • A cup of water + exercise

Steady protein template:
  • Fava beans with olive oil and cumin (the spleen loves well-cooked fava beans)

  • Whole wheat bread + low-salt cheese

  • Natural yogurt (not too cold)

Asian-Arab fusion template:
  • Chicken and ginger rice soup (the classic Chinese morning soup)

  • Dates + warm water

  • Cucumber: light and easy on the stomach

What to Avoid?

AvoidThe Chinese reason
--------------------
White baked goods and sweetsFast energy then a crash — "false sugar"
Very salty foodsThirst all day long — the kidneys are burdened
Coffee on an empty stomachBurns "stomach yin (阴)" and increases thirst
Heavy fried foodsThe spleen drowns in fat — fatigue two hours later

The Golden Suhoor Recipe (Seven-Grain Soup)

Cook for 20 minutes: a spoonful of oats + a spoonful of rice + a spoonful of red lentils + peeled date pieces + a slice of ginger + a little cinnamon + honey after cooking. One soup gives you energy, water, and warmth until the afternoon.

After Suhoor

Walk for 10 minutes if possible — "a step after eating builds the stomach." And do not sleep immediately: leave at least 30 minutes for initial digestion.
