Winter Health (冬季养生)

Winter is the Water element, the Kidney organ, the color black, the emotion fear. It is a time of stillness, storage, and contemplation.

Characteristics of Winter

  • Element: Water 💧
  • Main Organ: Kidney and Bladder
  • Direction: North
  • Nature: Qi descends and stores (like roots)
  • Emotion: Fear (needs security)
  • Flavor: Salty (in moderation — enters the Kidney)

Winter Recommendations

🛌 Sleep

  • Sleep early: before 10 PM
  • Wake late: with or after sunrise
  • Warm the bed: do not sleep in the cold
  • Important point: The Kidneys regenerate from 5-7 PM — relax during this time

🍽️ Food

Recommended foods:

  • 🫘 Black seeds (black beans)
  • 🌰 Nuts (walnuts, chestnuts)
  • 🍖 Warming meats (lamb, chicken)
  • 🫚 Ginger and cinnamon (warming)
  • 🍲 Soups and broths (slow-cooked)
  • 🫚 Black seed (nigella)

Foods to avoid:

  • Raw and cold (salad, ice cream)
  • Excessive salty foods (harm the Kidney)
  • Raw foods

🏃 Exercise

  • Best: Tai Chi, internal Qi Gong
  • Time: late morning or noon (warmest time)
  • Intensity: light — do not sweat in the cold
  • Goal: strengthen without depleting

😌 Emotions

  • Avoid: excessive fear, anxiety
  • Practice: security, confidence, calm
  • Reflection: review your goals, plan for the coming year

Strengthening the Kidneys in Winter

Point KI3 (太溪) — "Great Valley"

  • Benefit: strengthens the Kidneys, treats back and knee pain
  • Method: press for 5 minutes in the evening

Point KI1 (涌泉) — "Bubbling Spring"

  • Location: center of the sole of the foot
  • Benefit: calms the mind, lowers rising heat, strengthens the Kidneys
  • Method: massage before sleep

Signs of Kidney Weakness

  • Cold feet and hands
  • Frequent nighttime urination
  • Pain in the lower back and knees
  • Hair loss
  • Tinnitus
  • Poor memory
  • Unjustified fear

💧 The rule: In winter, be like a seed under the earth — still, storing, ready. Do not spend your energy. Spring will come and will need that stored energy!
