Spring Health (春季养生)

Spring is the Wood element, the Liver organ, the color green, the emotion anger (healthy). It is a time of growth, expansion, and renewal.

Characteristics of Spring in Chinese Medicine

  • Element: Wood 🌿
  • Main Organ: Liver and Gallbladder
  • Direction: East
  • Nature: Qi rises and expands (like plants)
  • Emotion: Anger (needs positive transformation)
  • Taste: Sour (moves the Liver)

Spring Health Recommendations

🛌 Sleep

  • Wake up early: with sunrise
  • Sleep a little earlier: but not as early as in winter
  • Do not nap during the day: it disturbs the rising Liver Qi

🍽️ Food

Recommended foods:

  • 🌿 Green leafy vegetables (spinach, mint, parsley)
  • 🍋 Moderate sourness (lemon, vinegar)
  • 🌱 Sprouts and seeds (growth, sprouted beans)
  • 🍯 Honey (a spoonful in the morning)
  • 🍵 Green tea or rose tea

Foods to avoid:

  • Fatty fried foods (weigh down the Liver)
  • Excessive spicy food (makes Liver Qi rise further)
  • Alcohol (poison to the Liver)

🏃 Exercise

  • Best: Outdoor exercise (walking, Tai Chi)
  • Time: Early morning
  • Intensity: Moderate — no exhaustion
  • Goal: To move stagnant Liver Qi

😌 Emotions

  • Avoid: Suppressed anger, frustration
  • Practice: Patience, tolerance, flexibility
  • Exercise: 10 deep breaths when feeling agitated

Useful Acupressure Points in Spring

LR3 Point (太冲) — "Great Valley"

  • Location: Top of the foot, between the big toe and second toe
  • Benefit: Calms anger, moves Liver Qi, relieves headaches
  • Method: Press for 3 minutes on each foot

GB20 Point (风池) — "Wind Pool"

  • Location: Base of the skull, in the two hollows
  • Benefit: Expels wind, relieves headaches and neck pain
  • Method: Gently massage in circles

Signs of Liver Imbalance in Spring

  • Recurrent headaches (especially forehead and temples)
  • Mood swings, irritability
  • Pain in the right side of the ribs
  • Red, dry eyes
  • Sleep disturbance (waking at 1-3 a.m.)
  • Painful or irregular menstruation

🌿 The rule: In spring, be like a tree — flexible, growing, renewing. Do not be rigid or repressed. Allow the Liver Qi to expand freely!
