治病必先明脏腑，别阴阳，识标本。
Translation
To treat disease one must understand yin and yang, cold and heat, root and branch, urgency and slack. The zang and fu have deficiency and excess; medicinal natures have cold, heat, warm and cool. Know what is fitting and do not run counter to the season, and the medicine will remove the disease.
📝 Commentary
Zhang Yuansu's Jin-dynasty work founded zang-fu pattern differentiation and the channel-tropism theory of medicinals. This general statement frames treatment in terms of yin-yang, root-branch, organ deficiency-excess and medicinal temperature.
