Prevention in Traditional Chinese Medicine (治未病)

The greatest principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine is: "Treat the disease before it occurs" (上工治未病). This concept, 2,500 years old, preceded modern medicine by two thousand years.

Three Levels of Prevention

First Level: Prevention Before Illness (未病先防)

Preventing illness before it occurs — this is the highest goal.

  • Strengthening immunity: Enhancing the body's qi
  • Proper nutrition: Eating according to constitution and season
  • Exercise: Baduanjin, Tai Chi, Qigong
  • Adequate sleep: Before midnight
  • Regulating emotions: No excessive anger, no constant anxiety

Second Level: Preventing Disease Progression (既病防变)

If illness occurs, prevent it from spreading.

  • Early diagnosis: Observing small changes
  • Prompt treatment: Before the disease spreads from one organ to another
  • Protecting healthy organs: Strengthening the organ that may be affected next

Third Level: Preventing Relapse (瘥后防复)

After recovery, prevent the disease from returning.

  • Gradual recovery: No sudden return to activity
  • Reinforcing nutrition: Foods that strengthen the affected organ
  • Follow-up: Continuous monitoring

The Law of Transmission (传变)

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, disease spreads in predictable ways:

Organ Transmission (脏腑传变)

  • Disease usually enters from the exterior (skin/nose) → LungSpleenLiverKidney
  • Each stage is deeper and harder to treat
  • Early treatment halts transmission

The Five Elements Cycle

  • Disease of Wood (Liver) may over-control Earth (Spleen)
  • Disease of Water (Kidney) may fail to control Fire (Heart)
  • Understanding these relationships helps in targeted prevention

Practical Prevention Methods

🌅 Morning

  1. 1Wake with the sun (before or with it)
  2. 2Drink a cup of warm water (not cold!)
  3. 3Practice 10 minutes of Baduanjin or stretching
  4. 4Warm, nutritious breakfast

🌞 Daytime

  1. 1Do not skip meals (the Spleen needs regular food)
  2. 2Take a rest after lunch (15 minutes)
  3. 3Do not get angry — anger harms the Liver
  4. 4Maintain good posture for the back

🌙 Evening

  1. 1Light dinner 3 hours before sleep
  2. 2No bright screens an hour before sleep
  3. 3Soak the feet in warm water (supports the Kidneys)
  4. 4Sleep before 11 PM (Liver and Gallbladder time)
