拾遗补阙，本草之功臣也。

Shí yí bǔ quē, běn cǎo zhī gōng chén yě.
English Translation
The Grand Compendium is vast and precise, yet it still has omissions. I have gathered what it left unprepared and picked up what it left out: all medicinals that were known but not recorded have been supplied, to extend what Li did not reach.

Zhao Xuemin's Qing supplement to Li Shizhen's Grand Compendium of Materia Medica. It explains his purpose: to collect what the Compendium omitted and supply what it left incomplete.
