From the TCM perspective: Teething: mild stomach heat/wind at the gums or dampness
Overview
Teething may bring drooling, chewing, swollen gums, fussiness and broken sleep. Teething does not cause high fever or severe diarrhea; a genuinely ill feverish child should be assessed for another illness. TCM links the discomfort to mild heat rising to the gums or dampness increasing saliva.
☯Common patterns (syndrome differentiation)
1
Stomach heat rising to gums
Key distinguishing signs
Red swollen gums, chewing, sticky drool, fussiness and slight bad breath, red tongue
Treatment principle
Clear mild stomach heat and soothe the gums
2
Wind-heat at the gums
Key distinguishing signs
Mild swelling with a runny nose, slight cough, very mild fever and sneezing
Treatment principle
Disperse wind and clear mild heat
3
Spleen deficiency with dampness
Key distinguishing signs
Profuse watery drool in a relatively calm child with mild loose stool and gums not very red
Treatment principle
Strengthen the spleen and drain dampness
4
Mild food stagnation
Key distinguishing signs
Fussiness with bloating, sour drool, refusal of solids and burping, thick coat
Treatment principle
Digest stagnation and activate the stomach
Daily self-care
Offer a cool (not frozen) teether or a clean finger to rub the gums; wipe drool to prevent a chin rash.
Give cool soft foods once solids start, with extra rest and cuddles.
Avoid teething necklaces and prolonged numbing gels; ask a clinician for weight-based dosing.
When to seek medical help
The following warning signs require prompt medical evaluation — do not rely on self-treatment:
Fever ≥38 C (especially under 3 months), severe diarrhea/vomiting or lethargy.
Pus on the gums, non-wiping white patches (thrush/infection) or severe one-sided pain.
Widespread rash, dehydration or complete refusal to drink.
