Overview
Vessels (Mai) are the channels through which blood circulates, considered one of the five fundamental tissues in Traditional Chinese Medicine. They are closely connected to the Heart, which governs blood and vessels, and their pulsation is used in diagnosis.
Theoretical points
- Vessels are the pathways for blood, also known as the 'residence of blood' (xue fu), and are one of the five tissues (wu ti).
- The Heart governs blood and vessels; Heart Qi propels blood through the vessels in a continuous cycle.
- Vessels connect with the Heart and serve to constrain blood, ensuring it flows along the proper pathways.
- The pulsation of vessels can be palpated at sites such as the radial artery (cun kou), and this forms the basis of pulse diagnosis.
- Normal blood circulation requires sufficient blood volume, ample Heart Qi, and unobstructed vessel passages.
Common patterns
- Deficiency of Heart Qi may lead to weak propulsion of blood, resulting in sluggish or stagnant circulation.
- Insufficient blood or depletion of vessel contents can cause the vessels to be empty or thin, affecting pulse quality.
- Obstruction of the vessels by stasis or phlegm can impede blood flow, leading to pain or other circulatory disorders.
Daily care
- Maintain emotional balance and avoid excessive stress to support Heart Qi and healthy blood circulation.
- Engage in regular, moderate physical activity to promote smooth flow of blood and Qi.
- Follow a balanced diet that nourishes blood and supports cardiovascular health.
