Yuan Qi

Overview

Yuan Qi, also known as Original Qi, is the most fundamental and vital qi in the human body, rooted in the kidneys and derived from congenital essence, continuously nourished by acquired food and water essence. It circulates throughout the body via the Triple Burner, serving as the primary motive force for life activities, growth, development, and reproduction.

Theoretical points

  • Yuan Qi is a type of innate qi, transformed from the congenital essence (jing) inherited from parents, and is the root of all qi in the body.
  • It is stored in the kidneys and distributed throughout the body via the Triple Burner, reaching all internal organs and the skin and muscles.
  • Yuan Qi drives growth, development, and reproduction, and warms and activates the physiological functions of all organs and meridians.
  • It is continuously replenished by the essence of food and water (acquired essence) to maintain its vitality.

Common patterns

  • When Yuan Qi is abundant, organ functions are robust and resistance to disease is strong.
  • Deficiency of Yuan Qi may manifest as retarded growth, premature aging, reduced reproductive function, and general fatigue or lack of spirit.

Daily care

  • Maintain a balanced diet to support the acquired essence that nourishes Yuan Qi.
  • Avoid overexertion and chronic stress, which can deplete Yuan Qi.
  • Practice regular, moderate physical activity to promote the smooth flow of qi.
