Translation

The two masters are the most refined and detailed; wherever there are similarities and differences, they can all distinguish them clearly, using the brush to depict and compare forms, so that later students have no place for mistaken recognition—one may say they have greatly benefited this world. Unfortunately, as for the method of inspecting the tongue, the two masters had no specialized book; what is transmitted in the world is only the Shanghan She Jian and the Wenyi She Jian, and to seek one as detailed as the study of pulses, there is none. I, Rui, have therefore applied my mind for over thirty years, recording in notebooks what was tested in diagnosis and proved effective in treatment, unfailingly without error, to teach my disciples, not daring to consider myself right. In Gengxu, Comrade Yuan Guisheng of Zhenjun and others founded the Yixue Fulun Bao to promote and clarify medicine; I, Rui, dancing along attached to the steed, shared the responsibility for printing costs and report materials. By the winter of Gengxu, many of the gentlemen had thoughts of withdrawal, and printing costs and report materials were thereby lacking, about to become a suspended undertaking. I, Rui, filling a post unworthily, did not finish the printing; by the eighth month of Xinhai, the Fulun Bao of us, Rui and others, also underwent revolution together with the Qing tripods. Now the gentlemen of the Shaoxing Medical Association and the Shanghai Medical Association who read the reports often send letters to the two gentlemen Yuan and Yang requesting to read the complete draft. These are all old friends who read the Fulun Bao, not discarding me for my humble offerings. Probably they think my humble comparisons and depictions still have something worth adopting. Therefore, following the two gentlemen's proposal, I copied the complete draft, added a preface, and sent it to the Shaoxing Medical Journal, following Mr. Zhou Xiaonong's method of circulating books—also the painstaking effort of casting a brick to attract jade. This is the preface. I humbly beg the great masters to instruct and correct, to remedy my shortcomings; this would be fortunate. Written on the third day after the spring equinox of the year Rouzhao Zhixu, by Liu Hengrui, self-preface at the Youyu Zhai Tingyun Chuanshe in Jingjiang.
