Translation
For relieving famine, nothing comes before knowing plants. If one can tell the edible from the poisonous, then in years of dearth a great many lives can be saved. Thus plants are drawn and catalogued here as provision against famine.

Zhu Su's Ming monograph on famine foods. It states its purpose: to teach recognition of edible versus poisonous plants so that lives may be saved in famine years.
