概述

Auscultation and Olfaction (wen zhen) is a diagnostic method in Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves listening to sounds and smelling odors to assess the condition of the body. It is one of the four diagnostic methods, alongside inspection, inquiry, and palpation.

理论要点

  • Listening to sounds includes evaluating the voice, breathing, coughing, vomiting, hiccups, and belching, focusing on pitch, strength, and clarity to determine the nature of the condition, such as heat or cold, excess or deficiency.
  • A loud, forceful voice typically indicates excess heat, while a low, weak voice suggests deficiency cold.
  • Smelling odors involves assessing the patient's breath, body odor, secretions, excretions, and the smell of the sickroom to identify pathological patterns.
  • Sour, putrid, or foul odors are often associated with food stagnation or excess heat.
  • Auscultation and olfaction must be integrated with findings from inspection, inquiry, and palpation for a comprehensive diagnosis.

常见病机

  • Abnormal voice patterns, such as hoarseness or loss of voice, can reflect disorders of the lungs or throat, often due to external pathogens or internal deficiency.
  • Foul breath or body odor may indicate heat in the stomach or intestines, or the presence of dampness-heat.
  • Offensive-smelling secretions or excretions, such as urine or stool, suggest heat or dampness-heat patterns.

日常调养

  • Maintain a balanced diet to avoid food stagnation, which can lead to sour or foul breath.
  • Practice good hygiene to minimize body odors that may complicate diagnosis.
  • Seek timely medical evaluation if persistent changes in voice or body odor occur.
