少陽病

概述

Shaoyang Disease is a pattern in Traditional Chinese Medicine where pathogenic factors lodge in the half-exterior, half-interior, with the struggle between righteous Qi and pathogenic Qi occurring between the exterior and interior. It is characterized by alternating chills and fever, chest and rib fullness, and is treated by harmonizing the Shaoyang level.

理論要點

  • Shaoyang Disease arises when pathogenic factors invade the Shaoyang channel, positioning between the exterior and interior, a state described as 'half-exterior, half-interior'.
  • The Shaoyang acts as a pivot (shu), regulating the movement of Qi between the exterior and interior; when disturbed, it leads to a condition that is neither purely exterior nor purely interior.
  • Primary symptoms include alternating chills and fever, fullness in the chest and ribs, a quiet demeanor with reduced desire for food, restlessness with a tendency to vomit, bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, dizziness, and a wiry pulse.
  • Because the pathogen resides at the half-exterior, half-interior level, neither sweating (to expel exterior pathogens) nor purging or vomiting (to expel interior pathogens) is appropriate, as these would disrupt the pivot and worsen the condition.
  • The treatment principle is to harmonize the Shaoyang, with the representative formula being Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction).

常見病機

  • Pathogenic factors invade the Shaoyang, causing a struggle between righteous Qi and pathogenic Qi at the boundary between exterior and interior, leading to alternating chills and fever.
  • Qi stagnation in the Shaoyang channel manifests as fullness and discomfort in the chest and ribs, while the stomach and intestines are affected, causing reduced appetite and nausea.
  • The upward disturbance of fire from the Shaoyang causes bitter taste, dry throat, and dizziness, while the wiry pulse reflects tension in the Shaoyang channel.

日常調養

  • Maintain emotional calm and avoid excessive stress, as emotional disturbances can affect the pivot function of Shaoyang.
  • Follow a light diet with easily digestible foods, avoiding greasy or spicy items that may aggravate digestive symptoms.
  • Ensure adequate rest and avoid overexertion to support the body's righteous Qi in resolving the pathogen.
