概述

The Stomach (Wei) is one of the six fu organs, paired with the Spleen, and together they are considered the acquired foundation and the sea of grain and water. It receives and decomposes food, with descending as its normal function, and prefers moisture over dryness.

理論要點

  • The Stomach is a fu organ located in the middle burner, also called the gastric cavity, and is internally-externally paired with the Spleen; the Foot Yangming Stomach meridian belongs to the Stomach and connects to the Spleen.
  • It governs receiving and rotting and ripening of food and drink, initially digesting ingested substances and transmitting them downward to the Small Intestine.
  • The Stomach's Qi is characterized by descending; it is the pivot of turbid descent, while the Spleen governs ascending of clear Qi, and their coordination completes digestion and absorption.
  • The Stomach is fond of moisture and dislikes dryness, and its function is considered harmonious when it descends smoothly.

常見病機

  • Common Stomach disorders include Stomach Qi deficiency, Stomach Yin deficiency, Stomach cold, Stomach heat, and food stagnation in the Stomach.
  • Stomach Qi ascending counterflow leads to nausea, vomiting, belching, and hiccups.
  • Imbalance between Spleen ascending and Stomach descending disrupts the digestive process, manifesting as poor appetite, abdominal distension, or regurgitation.

日常調養

  • Maintain regular eating habits, avoiding overeating or prolonged hunger to support Stomach Qi.
  • Choose warm, easily digestible foods and limit cold, raw, or greasy items to protect Stomach Yang and Yin.
  • Eat in a calm environment and chew thoroughly to aid the Stomach's receiving and decomposing functions.
