qū shī fǎ治则治法

概述

The dampness-dispelling method (qu shi fa) is a TCM therapeutic strategy that removes excess damp pathogen, whether external dampness from a wet environment and rainy climate or internal dampness from impaired fluid transformation by the spleen. It is divided into aromatic transformation, warm drying, cold draining, and diuretic percolation, with strengthening the spleen—which 'loathes dampness and loves dryness'—as its central principle.

理论要点

  • Dampness is one of the six pathogenic factors: heavy, turbid, sticky, and slow, it obstructs the flow of qi and causes heaviness, distension, greasiness, and long recurrent illness, worsening in damp places and seasons.
  • The spleen is the pivot of fluid transformation and transport; when it weakens, water distribution fails and internal dampness accumulates, hence 'the spleen is the source of engendered dampness.'
  • Cold-damp (coldness, loose stool, clear urine, a moist tongue with white coating) is distinguished from damp-heat (yellowness, stickiness, dark urine, a sticky yellow coating), each treated differently.
  • Removal has three routes: aromatic transformation of dampness in the upper and middle burners, warm drying or bitter cold in the middle, and urination that drains dampness downward through the bladder.

常见病机

  • Dampness encumbering the spleen: bodily heaviness, poor appetite, sticky stool, fatigue, a thick white tongue coating; transform the middle and dry gently.
  • Cold-damp: cold limbs, watery diarrhea, edema; dry with warmth and strengthen spleen movement.
  • Damp-heat: itching or yellow discharge, dark urine, bitter taste, a yellow tongue coating; cool, dry, and percolate.
  • Water stoppage and edema: fluid gathered in the tissues; promote urination and move qi while strengthening spleen, lung, and kidney.
  • Dampness retained with phlegm or wind: combine the dampness-dispelling method with phlegm-resolving or wind-expelling as appropriate.

日常调养

  • Reduce damp-engendering foods: sweets and sugar, dairy, fatty and fried and cold foods; favor warm well-cooked meals such as barley tea, ginger, and pumpkin.
  • Keep the home dry and ventilated, avoid lingering in damp places and wet clothes, and dry the hair before sleep.
  • Regular activity prevents damp stagnation because 'movement quickens qi and dries dampness,' with adequate sleep to support the spleen.
