xiāo fǎ治则治法

概述

The Dispersing Method (Xiao Fa) is a therapeutic approach in Traditional Chinese Medicine that uses formulas to gradually dissolve and disperse accumulated pathogenic factors such as food stagnation, qi stagnation, blood stasis, phlegm, water, and parasites. It is applied to conditions where tangible pathogens have formed slowly, and it acts more gently than the Purging Method (Xia Fa).

理论要点

  • Xiao Fa employs medicinals that promote digestion, guide stagnation, move qi, invigorate blood, transform phlegm, promote urination, and soften hardness to disperse accumulations.
  • It targets gradually formed tangible pathogens, including retained food, qi and blood stasis, abdominal masses (zheng jia), phlegm nodules (tan he), scrofula (luo li), calculi, and edema.
  • Compared to the Purging Method (Xia Fa), Xiao Fa is milder and works gradually, suitable for conditions with a slower progression that do not require aggressive purging.
  • The method is often combined with tonification (bu fa) to prevent damage to qi and yang, especially in patients with weak spleen and stomach.

常见病机

  • Accumulation of pathogens over time, such as food stagnation, qi stagnation with blood stasis, or phlegm and water retention, forms tangible masses.
  • These conditions are characterized by a relatively slow onset and a chronic course, without the urgency that demands immediate purging.
  • Excessive use of Xiao Fa can consume qi and damage healthy qi, making it unsuitable for patients with pure deficiency or weak spleen and stomach.

日常调养

  • Patients using Xiao Fa should maintain a balanced diet and avoid overeating to prevent food stagnation.
  • Gentle physical activity and stress reduction may support the movement of qi and blood.
  • Regular monitoring by a qualified practitioner is advised, as the method requires careful adjustment based on the individual's constitution.
