概述

The mouth (Kou) is the portal for food intake, speech, and respiration, and is considered the orifice of the Spleen in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its condition reflects the state of Spleen function and the nourishment of Qi and Blood.

理論要點

  • The mouth is the opening or 'orifice' of the Spleen, as stated in the principle 'the Spleen opens into the mouth' (pi kai qiao yu kou).
  • The mouth is one of the five sense organs (wu guan) and works in coordination with the teeth, tongue, and throat for chewing, tasting, and speaking.
  • When Spleen Qi is healthy and transporting normally, appetite is regular, taste is normal, and the lips are moist and rosy, as the lips are the external manifestation of the Spleen.
  • The color and moisture of the lips reflect the state of Spleen and Stomach Qi and Blood, serving as a diagnostic indicator.

常見病機

  • If Spleen function is impaired (Spleen failing to transport and transform), the mouth may feel bland or tasteless, and appetite may be poor (anorexia).
  • Dampness and heat in the Spleen and Stomach can cause a sweet, sticky taste in the mouth and halitosis or abnormal mouth odor.
  • Deficiency of Spleen Qi or Blood may lead to pale or sallow lips, while blood stasis or heat can cause dark red or purple lips.

日常調養

  • Maintain a regular diet with moderate portions to support Spleen function and avoid overeating or irregular eating habits.
  • Keep the mouth clean and practice good oral hygiene to prevent dampness and heat accumulation.
  • Manage stress and emotions, as worry and overthinking can weaken the Spleen and affect the mouth.
