概述

Shen (Spirit) in Traditional Chinese Medicine denotes both the outward manifestation of vital life activities and the inner realm of consciousness, thought, and emotion. It is rooted in the essential substances of the body and is closely observed in clinical diagnosis.

理論要點

  • Shen has broad and narrow meanings: broadly, it refers to the external expression of the body's vital activities, often called shenqi; narrowly, it denotes mental, conscious, and cognitive functions.
  • Shen is materially based on essence (jing), qi, blood, and body fluids, with the Heart housing Shen and governing mental activities.
  • Blood is the primary material foundation of Shen, and the state of Shen reflects the sufficiency and harmony of these vital substances.
  • The flourishing or decline of Shen is observed through the eyes, complexion, facial expression, speech, and responsiveness, and is a key focus of diagnostic inspection.

常見病機

  • When essence, qi, and blood are sufficient, Shen is well-nourished and manifests as vitality and clarity; deficiency or depletion of these substances leads to Shen disturbances.
  • Loss of Shen (shishen) indicates severe depletion of essence and qi, often associated with critical illness or poor prognosis.
  • False Shen (jiashen) may appear as a transient, apparent revival in severe illness, signifying imminent collapse of vital qi.

日常調養

  • Maintain a balanced lifestyle that supports the generation and preservation of essence, qi, blood, and body fluids, such as regular rest and moderate exercise.
  • Cultivate emotional stability and mental calm, as excessive emotions can directly disturb the Heart and Shen.
